The KNX standard
KNX is a standardised network communication protocol (EN 50090, ISO/IEC 14543) for smart buildings, independent of any specific hardware platform. It is approved as an open standard by:
- International standard ISO/IEC 14543-3
- Canadian standard CSA-ISO/IEC 14543-3
- European standard CENELEC EN 50090 and CEN EN 13321-1
- Chinese Guo Biao standard GB/Z 20965
Why it matters
Any product carrying the KNX mark is not a simple manufacturer declaration — it rests on conformance testing by accredited KNX test labs, which check both the protocol and how the data itself is encoded. That is what lets devices from different manufacturers combine into one working installation.
